What Can You Do? Volunteer Work In Florida.

How can you play a role in preserving our coastal waters?  There are many things that people can do to help preserve and protect our marine environment.

  • Become a START Volunteer:
Our Chapters often involve local volunteers to assist at events, exhibits, and educational presentations about various marine environmental subjects like sustainable seafood or how to guard against the harmful effects of red tide blooms. Check out the upcoming events you would like to attend and contact us for details.
  • Educate yourself and those around you:
Learn all you can about the marine environment and what you can do to preserve it. Check our Resource section for listings of key environmental educational websites and information sources like  NOAA , Mote Marine Laboratories, FWRI  and our Coastal Classroom.
  • Support Local efforts to reduce coastal pollution and improve water quality:
Look for local marine environmental events like mangrove clean-ups with the Sarasota Bay Watch, or restoring seabird habitat with the Audubon Society. Practice responsible landscaping through the Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Program.
  • Contact your elected officials:
Email, call or write your elected officials at the local, state and federal level. Encourage them to support legislation that protects our marine environment from pollution, runoff and man-made disasters like oil spills. Ask them to fund pending projects that show promise as tools to control the harmful effects of red tide blooms.
