The Bradenton Herald reports that Congress has just authorized $82 million for new research aimed at controlling HABs or Harmful Algae Blooms.
Florida Senator Bill Nelson sponsored the bill and the Senate agreed on June 17th to support a House amendment to the bill which is now headed to President Obama for approval.
The legislation streamlines existing national efforts to study and fight HABs nationwide. The new bill amends the Harmful Algae Blooms and Hypoxia Research and Control Act of 1998.
Senator Nelson emphasized that the legislation will “help battle the algae that’s been choking off life in Florida waterways.”
