NOAA and CSU Predictions for Hurricane Season

Dr. Philip Klotzbach, a prominent hurricane specialist, along with his meteorologist team at Colorado State University, are known for their annual tropical weather outlooks that are issued during the spring and summer. They are predicting an above average Atlantic hurricane season in their initial 2025 forecast.

In April, CSU’s Tropical Cyclones, Radar, Atmospheric Modeling, and Software (TC-RAMS) Team within the Department of Atmospheric Science cites above- average subtropical eastern Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea surface temperatures as a primary factor for their prediction of nine total hurricanes this year.

In a press release issued on May 22, 2025, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued their outlook for the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season. The agency is forecasting a range of 13 to 19 total named storms. Of those, 6-10 are forecast to become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 3-5 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher).

The 2025 Tropical Cyclone names, chosen by the World Meteorological Organization are: Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dexter, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle, Humberto, Imelda, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Nestor, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van and Wendy.
