SBW Kicks Off its 2013 On-the-Water Events
Sarasota Bay Watch kicked-off its 2013 on-the-water event calendar with two student cleanups. In March SBW again partnered with 25 Riverview High School National Honor Society Students for the 3rd Annual Skier’s Island Cleanup and removed 500 lbs of trash from the waterway island. Thanks again to Riverview High School students for getting their feet wet for a good cause!
SBW was also very excited to partner with students from Pineview School’s Marine Club for the 1st Annual Jim Neville Marine Preserve cleanup. This environmental gem near Midnight Pass is skirted by grass flats, which makes motor boat access difficult. Economy Tackle (Sarasota) and A Silent Sport Outfitter (Nokomis) came to the rescue and provided kayaks, which we launched from the Conservation Foundation’s Bay Preserve property in Osprey. Our group of 18 spent the morning removing tires, chairs, cans bottles, bicycle remains, a steering wheel – almost 400 lbs all told! We also improved trails and removed invasive plants under the guidance of Sarasota County’s George Tatge who oversees the Neville Preserve. Thanks to all for the enthusiasatic effort and great results!
